National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) leadership and advisers consider current research needs of the graduate medical education (GME) community.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 19, 2014

Earlier this month, the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) hosted a meeting of its new Research Advisory Committee to consider ways in which to grow NRMPs research agenda and address the needs of Match participants and stakeholders. The ten-member Committee includes individuals representing the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association, the Association of American Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, the Federation of State Medical Boards, and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Individual members with GME research experience also are members.

NRMP has a wealth of data, and we want to ensure we are maximizing its use, said Dr. Maria C. Savoia, Chair of the NRMP Data Release and Research Committee and President-Elect of the Board. We are committed to improving our existing reports and publications and are excited to build partnerships with organizations that can enhance the Match decision-making process for our constituents.

Topics discussed by the Committee included the career trajectory of unmatched applicants, Match experiences of graduates of international medical schools, and the changing landscape of the physician workforce. The Committee also discussed tracking the sub-specialization rates of physicians who initially choose primary care disciplines. Topics identified at the Research Advisory Committee meeting will be presented to and discussed by the NRMP Board at its October 2014 meeting.

The NRMP Match
The Match uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to align the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency program directors in order to fill training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals. Research on the NRMP algorithm was a basis for awarding The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 2012.
