SEC Network finally launches, set to reach over 90 million homes

Posted: Updated:

Southeastern Conference fans are ready. Today at 5 p.m. the SEC Network officially launches.

The network will reach more than 90 million homes making it the largest launch of a cable network ever.

Charlie Hussey is the SEC's associate commissioner for network relations. "It's a tribute to our fans, and their passion, our schools," says Hussey. "(There's been) a lot of buildup to this point. Our member schools have worked hard, along with ESPN, it's hard to believe it's finally here."

The network is based out of Charlotte, North Carolina because ESPN already had studio infrastructure in place.

"This is a national network. We're going to have content on it that SEC fans across the country. We're going to have content on it that fans around the country around are going to be able to watch."

College football fans will get quite a fix. 45 SEC games during the first four weeks of the season. Football action kicks off with games August 28 with Texas A&M at South Carolina and Temple at Vanderbilt.

Hussey wants to be clear, the network is more than just football.

"We're going to have five times the amount of coverage of basketball, volleyball, soccer and we'll get into the spring sports from there," says Hussey.

Darin White, sports marketing program director and a professor at Samford University, sees many advantages the network offers schools within the conference.

"60 to 70 percent of households will have access to (the SEC Network) on day one," says White. "(Universities) can promote their academic programs through this. Their student accomplishments. It will be a tremendous branding opportunity for the 14 (SEC) schools".

Fans were the driving force for this network. The SEC Network has made a twenty year broadcast commitment.

It all starts tonight.

"I think you have to give a lot of credit to our member institutions. It was a lot of work, but we got a lot of good people involved and as such, we've got to this point and we're ready to go."

SEC commissioner Mike Slive is in Charlotte for the launch of the network.  He will be on the show "SEC Now" with Brent Musberger. Again, it comes on at 5:00 PM.

There's still some details being worked out with cable providers about what channel it will be broadcast on.

Here is a list of channels for the SEC Network

AT&T U-Verse: 607 / 1607 HD.

Cable One: 66 / 441 HD

Dish Network: 408

DirecTV: 611

For Cox, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable, you need to check with your provider since the channels vary by locations.
