Tuscaloosa, Ala._The family of a 21-year-old man killed over the weekend outside a Tuscaloosa motel is talking to ABC 33/40. The aunt of Jamarcus Roberts believes her nephew was killed simply for 'taking up for another guy'.
Simetra Bogan says the suspect didn't even know her nephew. Bogan was in bed, when she got the call her nephew had been shot outside a Motel 6 in Tuscaloosa early Sunday morning.
"He wasn't into no drugs. He wasn't into none of that," Bogan said.
She says Jamarcus was getting ready to start a second job. He was trying to make a life for himself. He loved -old cars, music and girls. Jamarcus had left her house late Saturday night - going on a date with several others.
Skyler hinton, the man police say shot Jamarcus, was with another girl in the group. Bogan says others tell her Jamarcus got irritated that Hinton was picking on one of Jarmarcus' friends.
"He was picking on this other little guy that was in the car with my nephew. The guy is smaller and from what I understand my nephew was like you're not fixing to mess with him," Bogan said.
Police believe the argument started on the University Strip and culminated at Motel 6. They say Hinton shot Jamarcus in the chest when he got out the car. Bogan says it was non-sense.
"I swear, I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison. I can't get my nephew back. And for him to do a couple of years and get out on the streets, what message does that send to all of these other young boys who think it's okay," Bogan said.
Skyler Hinton remains in the Tuscaloosa County Jail charged with murder. A $75,000 dollar bond has been set.
