West Alabama city facing action from IRS

Posted: Updated:

UNIONTOWN, Ala. (AP) - Uniontown city officials say they're preparing themselves for penalties from the IRS, which is looking to recoup more than $500,000 in back payroll taxes.

City officials announced the issue Wednesday and mayor Jamaal Hunter says most of the debt was accumulated before he took office in 2008.

Hunter says about $33,000 has been added to the debt since he took office because several quarterly payroll tax statements were filed late.

Hunter says the clerk responsible for filing statements is still working as a clerk for the city, and officials say they've worked with her to make sure the statements are sent on time in the future.

Hunter says city officials are preparing for the possibility that the IRS will seize property to resolve the debt.
