Hoover Police gives hundreds of warnings, tickets over holiday period

Posted: Updated:

The Hoover Police Department said it would start a "zero tolerance" policy on June 29. And officers meant it.

The department issued a total of 589 warnings and 344 tickets from June 29 to July 6, according to Cpt.Gregg Rector. Officers focused heavily on Interstates 65 and 459. I-459 was the scene of four deaths in three separate crashes last month.

Rector tells ABC 33/40 the vast majority of tickets were issued for speeding, with violations such as following too closely and merging problems rounding out the top three. The Mayor's Office has told police to continue increased patrol until further notice, Rector says.

The Alabama Department of Transportation is considering what, if any, barriers need to be placed on I-459 to address traffic flow issues. A team from Montgomery visited the areas last week.
