Accused Chelsea Middle School shooter declared not guilty by reason of mental disease

Posted: Updated:
CHELSEA - AL - The man accused of holding Chelsea Middle School students at gun point and making terrorist threats will not go to trial. Monday, a Shelby County judge declared 22 year old Ryan Sims not guilty by reason of mental disease.

Sims' attorneys agreed to a deal placing him in the state's custody. He will be committed to a state mental facility until the court decides to release him. This comes after an evaluation at the Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility that diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia.

The 22 year old was accused of holding five Chelsea Middle School girls at gunpoint inside a school locker room last year. A deputy and principal were able to talk him into releasing the students. Sims, a former part time school employee, was charged with kidnapping and making terrorists threats.
