State Troopers urging drivers to slow down in construction zones after two fatal wrecks

Posted: Updated:
HOOVER - AL - Two accidents are under investigation.  A total of three adults died, two children are injured.  Both happened on Interstate 459 in Hoover.

The first accident happened early Tuesday morning. 52 year old Joseph Conzelman died when the Porsche he was driving hit an RV and slammed into a pole.  The crash was in a construction zone at exit 13. Investigators say speed may be a factor.

The second crash killed two adults and sent two children to the hospital  - one with life threatening injuries.  Hoover Police say the SUV was going North on 459.  It crossed the median into the southbound side just north of Highway 31. Several passengers were ejected.

Both crashes happened near a re-paving project.  State Trooper Curtis Summerville says the construction zone is no different than any other, but a change in the way traffic flows increases danger.

"Sometimes when you have an area with a high volume such as 459, there are more people out there as opposed to a routine rural area," State Trooper Curtis Summerville said. "It provides more challenges because you're dealing with other people. Often times people don't take the time to slow down or do what they're supposed to do."

The Alabama Department of Transportation says this is a re-surfacing project.  It stretches 3.2 miles along I-459 in Hoover.  It's expected to be complete by September.
