The 23rd Annual Middle College National Consortiums Summer Professional Development Conference, June 28-June 30th, will focus on the STEM Middle Early College Partnership as well as The Common Core State Standards. Participants will engage in learning how to apply the Common Core in their classrooms as well as the next practices needed for student success.

The 23rd Annual Middle College National Consortiums Summer Professional Development Institute will begin this Saturday, June 28th at the Jersey City Hyatt Regency. Preceding the conference by one day will be a special orientation for those schools that are part of a five year prestigious I3 federal grant that MCNC has been awarded in partnership with NCREST, Teachers College and Jobs for the Future. According to Dr. Cecilia Cunningham, founder and director of MCNC, Our i3 grant, STEM Early College Expansion Partnership, or SECEP, is based on the expansion of Early Colleges with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The future workplace will require greater facility with STEM concentrations, but despite the economic demand, student interest and achievement in STEM disciplines have remained stagnant.
This year the MCNC Summer PD Institute will focus on the STEM Middle Early College Partnership as well as The Common Core State Standards. Participants will engage in learning how to apply the Common Core in their classrooms as well as the next practices needed for student success. This years keynote address will be give by Dr. Christopher Emdin Associate Professor, Science Education, Teachers college, Columbia University. Dr. Emdin is a science advocate, co creator of #HipHopEd social media movement, and serves as Director of Science Education at the Center for Health Equity and Urban Science Education.
Institute participants can choose to attend any five of forty five workshops given by distinguished educators and staff developers. Examples of the wide variety of workshops are The Common Core and Inquiry Instruction in Mathematics, What is Literacy? Creating School-Wide Literacy Routines, STEM Experiences and College Coursework in High School: Equipping All Our Students With Basic STEM Awareness, Working with Students of Poverty: Equalizing the Playing Field, and Robotics in STEM Education. As in all past conferences the afternoons provide times for Institute participants to meet in teams, reflect upon the previous year, exchange ideas with colleagues and plan for the upcoming year.
