Birmingham Barons announce new Hall of Fame class

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL - The Birmingham Barons will induct four new members to it's Hall of Fame.

Outfielder Mike Cameron, pitcher Joe Grzenda, manager Johnny Dobbs and longtime broadcaster Gabby Bell will be honored at next week's Rickwood Classic against the Mississippi Braves.

"The Barons are proud to induct another stellar class into the Barons Hall of Fame," said Barons General Manager Jonathan Nelson. "All four men are well deserving of the honor, having performed at the highest level in their chosen professions while showing great character and reputation in contributing to the success and promotion of professional baseball in Birmingham."

Mike Cameron played for the Barons for portions of the 1995 and 1996 seasons. He was named a First Team Minor League All-Star Outfielder by Baseball America after the 1996 season in which he hit .300 with 28 home runs, 34 doubles, 12 triples, 77 RBI, 39 stolen bases and a team record 120 runs scored.

Cameron played for eight teams in a 17 year big league career before he retired after the 2011 season.

Johnny Dobbs managed the Barons from 1925-1929 and led Birmingham to back-to-back championships (1928-29). He's one of just two managers in franchise history to win multiple league titles.

Joe Grzenda pitched for the Barons during five separate seasons and helped Birmingham to two championships (1958, 1967). He finished his Barons career with a record of 31-15 and a 3.29 ERA over 126 appearances.

Grzenda played for eight teams in in a 18 year MLB career.

Gabby Bell was the Barons play-by-play broadcaster in the late 1940s and through most of the 1950s, a period that was known as the glory years of the Southern Association baseball league. Bell is known as the 'Voice of the Birmingham Barons'.

The franchise has inducted 38 members into it's Hall of Fame since 2005.

This year's Hall of Fame class will be honored at Rickwood Field on June 25th before the Barons play Mississippi.
