Security shortage at Jefferson County Courthouse causes locked doors

Posted: Updated:
If you're headed to the Jefferson County Courthouse in downtown Birmingham, you may be blocked from entering on one side.

Doors on the side of Richard Arrington Boulevard were locked Tuesday. County manager Tony Petelos says the county does not have enough security to handle the entrances. He says there have been several retirements over the last year and a half. And the county is now down 10 security officers.

"Until we are able to bring some folks on board....you will see this happening more and more often until we can get some relief," Petelos says.

He added the county is working with its human resources department and the Jefferson County Personnel Board to get more help. In the meantime, leaders are moving forward with a temporary contract for private assistance.

Petelos says the entrance on the Linn Park side of the building will remain open.
