City of Birmingham awards neighborhood grants

. - Mayor William Bell announced Tuesday the neighborhoods that will be recipients of funding through the 2014 “Love Your Block” grant program. The program funds volunteer-led, neighborhood revitalization.

The City of Birmingham, Cities of Service, Alabama Power Foundation and the Home Depot Foundation support this initiative.
The 2014 Love Your Block Grant recipients will receive grants of $1,500.00. Those neighborhoods are:

Arlington-West End
This neighborhood is proposing to cut grass and pick-up trash on certain distressed blocks within their neighborhood. This project will fill the needs of elderly resident that can’t keep up their yards. Neighborhood leaders are hoping that this project will serve as a catalyst for change throughout the neighborhood.

Sherman Heights
This neighborhood is proposing to update the entranceway into the neighborhood and remove trees and other debris from the community.

Maple Grove
This neighborhood plans to update the area around their neighborhood sign with plants and shrubs.

Crestwood North
This neighborhood proposes to provide benches around the pool area of their neighborhood park.

Eastlake
This neighborhood is having an Eastlake Pride and Respect Day, which is a neighborhood cleaning and revitalization project that will move across the community one street at a time.

Jones Valley
This neighborhood plans to breathe life into a dormant neighborhood garden.

Bush Hills
This neighborhood plans to revitalize a two block area with new plantings and shrubs.

Six neighborhoods will receive Honorable Mention grants of $500. They are:

Central Park
Kingston
Ensley
Gate City
Five Points South
Tuxedo

2013 Love Your Block Grantees were eligible for a continuation grant of $1,000. Those recipients are:

Zion City – Neighborhood Beautification Project
West End Manor – West End
Community Garden
Killough Springs – Grayson Park Revitalization
Oakwood Place – Operation Erosion Control
