BIRMINGHAM - AL - Scott Padgett is the new head basketball coach at Samford.

Padgett replaces Bennie Seltzer, who was 24-41 in two seasons with the Bulldogs.

Padgett was Seltzer's top assistant the last two seasons. He's also served as an assistant coach at Manhattan College (2010-12) and the University of Kentucky (2009-10).

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to be the head coach at Samford University and to coach these outstanding young men,” said Padgett in a press release through the school. “This program is going to be all about our players; former, current and future. It’s going to be about promoting the mission of this great university and helping these young men in their academic, athletic and spiritual growth.”

Padgett played college basketball at Kentucky and helped the Wildcats to a National Championship in 1998. He was selected by the Utah Jazz in the first round of the 1999 NBA Draft.

In addition to the Jazz, Padgett played for the Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets and Memphis Grizzlies during an eight year NBA career.

“We’re going to play an exciting brand of basketball here at Samford, similar to the style I played under Rick Pitino and Tubby Smith at the University of Kentucky,” Padgett said. “We are going to press, get up and down the court for 40 minutes and wear down the opposition. It’s going to be a playing style that recruits, current players and fans will love.”

Samford has called a press conference for Monday to introduce Padgett as it's new basketball coach.
