Four people, including a juvenile arrested in West Alabama burglary ring

Posted: Updated:
Winfield-AL -      Several small businesses in West Alabama were relieved Thursday after police arrested four people they believed are connected to a round of burglaries.

16 burglaries were reported over the last month between four counties in four cities.  One of those was the Wayside Restaurant on highway 107 in Fayette County.  "Our front door was busted and our office door was busted.  We didn't have a clue as to what happened," said Brittney Colburn.

Winfield Police believe they busted the ring Thursday when a burglary to a business was called in.  They say they caught Stephen Busch, Ashley Hughes, Gregory Hughes and a juvenile in the act.  "The business had been burglarized one time just days before by the same people," said Chief Robert Blaycock.

Police confiscated boxes tobacco products , stolen cash registers, clothing and knives and guns...which they say were stolen in one burglary and used in others.  Investigators believe they used a broken iron pipe and J-hook to bust their way into the businesses.

Authorities say they linked the suspects to other robberies by using surveillance video from the Wayside Restaurant.  "We had video from Wayside that showed the truck -- a good picture of the truck," said Lt. Brett Burleson with Winfield Police Dept.

Once police realized all of the items didn't come from one place, they say the suspects ultimately confessed to hitting 16 businesses and a fire station in Fayette, Marion, Hamilton and Franklin counties in one month.

Each faces a number of charges including burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and possession of burglars tools.
