Several road projects underway in Hoover

Posted: Updated:
Riverchase Galleria opened in 1986. At the time, a new lane was added on Highway 31 south to allow shoppers to drive into one of three entrances.

But, the additional lane has never extended all the way to Highway 150.

That's about to change.

Road crews are tearing out concrete islands, turning it into a straight through-lane all the way down to Highway 150.

Beginning Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM through Wednesday morning at 6:00 AM, the southbound outside lane of Highway 31 will be closed from I-459 to the Shelby County line.

This is being done to widen turn lanes and continue to remove concrete islands from these locations.

ALDOT wanted this work to be done at night so it would not hinder people trying to get to work during rush hour.

Those who live in the area call this a welcome sight.

"That's good. I think it's good. It tends to get backed up there regularly. It's almost like (Highway) 280 around here sometimes. So, it looks like that's going to help," says Hoover resident Clay McCrackin.

Another project underway in Hoover is the repaving of I-459 southbound, from Highway 31 to Highway 150. That begins Tuesday after 7:00 PM as well.

There will also be a lane closure northbound on I-459 as ALDOT does shoulder work on that stretch of interstate from Highway 150 to Highway 31.

Drivers are encouraged to consider other routes and adjust their departure and arrival times.
