Hearing delayed for Shelby County kidnapping suspect

SHELBY COUNTY - AL -
A Shelby County judge delayed the hearing for a 22-year-old man accused of taking middle school students hostage last year.

Ryan Matthew Sims was originally scheduled to appear in court May 27, but a judge has moved that hearing to July 7th. According to court documents filed by Sims' attorney on Friday, his attorneys are seeking clarification on the court's order continuing cases and they are seeking for bond to be reinstated. According to court documents, a state expert's mental evaluation of Sims found at the time of the offense he was suffering from a severe mental disease and was unable to appreciate the nature and quality of his actions or the wrongfulness of his acts. Sims' attorneys believe bond should be reinstated since the state's expert mental evaluation reported he is now legally competent and has ben receiving and complying with his treatment. The defense claims he is no longer a risk. Sims' attorney are also asking the judge to move the next court hearing up from July 7th. They say they have scheduling conflicts on that day. They also want the judge to clarify as to what type of hearing will be held on that day. Sims' hearing for May 27th was originally a status hearing.

Sims faces five counts of first-degree kidnapping and one charge of making terrorist threat. He is being held in the Shelby County jail.
