HAMILTON, Ala. -- Authorities have arrested a man on attempted murder charges after he allegedly stabbed a Hamilton police officer and another person late Friday night, the Marion County Sheriff's Office confirmed to ABC 33/40.

Terrance Edwards, 30, is charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with a double stabbing around 10 p.m. Edwards is accused of stabbing an Hamilton Police Officer Eric Zills and another man who attempted to intervene during the attack.

Zills (shown left in a photo from his Facebook account) was taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, where, according to police, he underwent surgery Saturday night. He continues to recover in the hospital, Hamilton police said on its Facebook page.

The other victim was taken to an area hospital in Hamilton, where he was treated and released.

The mother of the suspect -- 56-year-old Judy Edwards -- was also arrested after she allegedly attempted to prevent deputies from arresting her son at her home in Hamilton. She is charged with first-degree hindering of prosecution and resisting arrest.

Both mother and son were booked into the Marion County Jail. Terrance Edwards is being held on bonds totaling $120,000. Bond information for Judy Edwards wasn't immediately made available.

The Hamilton Police Department posted the following message on its Facebook page shortly after the incident:

"Please keep our officer involved in tonight's incident in your prayers and also for the brave efforts of the civilian involved also. Also, please keep the Facebook chatter of the incident down to keep from spreading untrue rumors. There are still a lot of details unknown that will have to be investigated. The suspect involved is in custody. Also a big thank you to all of the surrounding agencies who assisted us in this event."

ABC 33/40 reporter Edward Burch will have a full report on this story on the news at 6 p.m., which you can watch live online by clicking here.
