SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. -- A Chelsea High School teacher was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday for allegedly having sexual contact with a student, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said.

Donald Ray Teague, 57, is charged with one count of a school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19 years. He was booked into the county jail on a $30,000 bond.

Teague has been on administrative leave since March, when an investigation was launched after a female student reported the incident in question to the school resource deputy. Evidence was later presented to the grand jury, resulting in the subsequent arrest of Teague.

Shelby County Schools spokeswoman Cindy Warner released the following statement on the arrest:

“The Shelby County Schools District has been notified by law enforcement officials that a teacher has been arrested and charged with criminal misconduct. The gravity of the charges necessitated immediate action by the Board and that was taken. Because the matter is the subject of law enforcement investigation and action, we are not at liberty to discuss further details at this time. We are, however, cooperating with the Sheriff’s Department in this investigation.”
