Carbon Hill's Gerald Smith signs to play basketball at Samford

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL - Gerald Smith isn't ready to give up the 'Bulldog' mascot.

Samford basketball announced that the Carbon Hill High School star is part of it's four player signing class.

Smith commitment to the school last month. The 6-foot-5, 190 pound guard averaged 18.7 points, 14.5 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3.4 assists a game last season.

"Gerald carried his team last year," Samford head coach Bennie Seltzer said in a press release. "He did everything that was asked of him by his high school. He rebounded the ball well and would constantly guard bigger players. He did everything. Even though he'll be just a freshman this season, he played all four years of high school at the varsity level. He will make a sudden impact with his athleticism and his ability to shoot the basketball. He always plays hard and has a great passion for basketball."

Samford also signed three junior college players in it's class. Guards Darius Gibson (Barton County Junior College), Marcus Johnson (Wallace State Junior College) and Jamal Shabazz (Lamar State College) are eligible to play for the Bulldogs for two years.
