Vestavia Hills police arrest Chelsea man, 35, for rape and burglary at Cahaba Heights apartment

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. -- A Chelsea man was arrested Saturday on rape and burglary charges, Vestavia Hills police announced.

Romel Mayorga, 35, is charged with first-degree rape and second-degree burglary in connection with an incident at a Crowne at Overton Village apartment on May 3. He is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $90,000.

"VHPD commends our department’s investigators for their tireless efforts in this case and also wish to extend our gratitude to the Hoover Police Department for their assistance," Vestavia Hills Police Chief Dan Rary said in a news release.

Residents at the apartment complex learned of the incident through a letter from the property managers, who also provided safety tips.
