Suspect in interstate sexual assault arrested in Georgia

Posted: Updated:
JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL - The suspect in a sexual assault that took place last month is behind bars in Georgia.

On April 23, deputies responded to a report of an assault that had occurred on Interstate 59 near mile marker 117. A 34-year-old woman said her car had broken down. While she was waiting for help, a passing motorist in a white van stopped. The man offered to help her. After looking under the hood, he told her that she needed oil and coolant and offered to take her to the store. He took her to three gas stations in Fairfield and then back to her car. Once they arrived, the man slapped her, sexually assault her and took her money and cell phone. He then left her on the side of the road. Another motorist stopped and called 911. Detectives sent a description of the vehicle and the suspect to law enforcement agencies across the Southeast. On April 30, detectives received information from Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia that offered clues of a crime spree in three states. The investigation revealed the man matching the suspect's description had robbed a woman in Byram, Mississippi on April 22 and then then stole a white van from a church in Jackson, MS. Authorities say he then drove through Alabama where he is believed to have attacked the victim on Interstate 59. After that attack, detectives believe he continued to Metro Atlanta where he robbed another victim and led police on a pursuit before being captured.

Jefferson county detective obtain photographs of the suspect and identified him as 21-year-old Malachi Moody of Jackson, MS. He is charged with rape first-degree and sodomy first-degree. He will be extradited to Alabama when released in Georgia.
