Alabama Red Cross opens emergency aid stations and updates shelter locations

Posted: Updated:
The Alabama Red Cross is helping people across the state in the aftermath of the recent tornadoes and flooding. Shelters are still open and Red Cross relief efforts will continue this weekend as people continue the monumental task of cleaning up their homes and neighborhoods. The Red Cross will be handing out relief supplies like brooms, buckets, gloves, shovels, rakes and tarps at the following locations in Jefferson County:

  • Visionary Methodist Church, 1829 Dartmouth Avenue, Bessemer, AL
  • Graysville Senior Center, 215 2nd Street SW, Graysville, AL
Emergency Aid Stations are also open at several locations in the affected areas of the state. These emergency aid stations are staffed with trained Red Cross disaster workers who are assisting people with recovery information, referrals, casework services, and emotional support. The stations are located as follows:

·         BLOUNT COUNTY: 96 2nd Ave East, Oneonta, AL

·         CULLMAN COUNTY: Cross Haven Church, 9131 US Hwy 31 South, Hanceville, AL

·         ETOWAH COUNTY: Bethlehem Baptist Church, 5850 Sardis Road, Boaz, AL

·         JEFFERSON COUNTY: United Methodist Church of Kimberly, 9178 Old Hwy 31, Kimberly, AL

·         LEE COUNTY: Crawford Baptist Church, 4503 US 80 West, Crawford, AL

·         LIMESTONE COUNTY: 1300 Armory Street, Athens, AL

·         TUSCALOOSA COUNTY: Woodland Forrest BC, 6701 Hargrove Road East, Tuscaloosa, AL

Since the storms rolled through, the Red Cross has opened a total of 13 shelters. Currently, only one shelter remains open in the state, it is located at Macedonia Family Life Center, 1411 26th Street North in Bessemer, Alabama. All other shelters that were open in Jefferson, Lee, and Limestone Counties are now closed. The Red Cross will be on the ground for weeks supporting those affected. As people begin to recover from the storm, Red Cross workers will join with local community partners to provide additional services. For example, in some areas the Red Cross will help to open community resource centers bringing all of the organizations and agencies together in one convenient location to help those affected. Red Cross caseworkers will also meet one-on-one with people to create recovery plans, navigate paperwork and locate help from other agencies.
