BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Samford has hired former NFL placekicker Al DelGreco as men's golf coach.

DelGreco, whose hiring was announced on Friday, spent 17 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2001. He has spent the past eight years co-hosting a sports talk show on Birmingham's WJOX and will continue those duties.

DelGreco was featured in a Golf Channel reality show in 2013, serving as captain of a team of former NFL players in a benefit golf tournament held in Puerto Rico.

The 1987 Auburn graduate was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Samford says DelGreco has a plus-1 handicap.
