Birmingham firefighters battling large house fire near Avondale

Update:
Birmingham firefighters spent much of the day battling a large house fire near Avondale, but they have since extinguished the blaze.

The owners of the home located at 544 53rd Street South weren't home when the fire started and no one was injured.

It is still unknown what caused the fire as an investigation remains ongoing.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Firefighters are battling a large house fire near Avondale late Thursday morning.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue units were called to a two-alarm blaze shortly before 11 a.m. at a home in the 500 block of 53rd Street South, which is just south of the Interstate 20/59 junction. Firefighters were seen climbing the steep roof of the burning home, dangling dangerously close to the edge while trying to extinguish the blaze.


The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

It is unknown at this time if anyone was inside the house when the fire started. No injuries have been reported.
