Update: UA swimmer killed during storms in Tuscaloosa

The man killed Monday night has been identified as John Servati, a Junior at the University of Alabama and member of the UA swim team.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Officials in Tuscaloosa said one person died and another was injured during severe weather in the city Monday night.

Between 4 p.m. and midnight, Tuscaloosa received 2.13 inches of rain and 13,000 outages were experienced as storms swept through west Alabama. According to a news release, 213 calls were made to 311 -- Tuscaloosa's non-emergency call center -- while police and fire responded to 190 calls during the long-term severe weather event.

A 21-year-old man was killed on 22nd Avenue after a basement wall collapsed on top of him. Another person was injured, though, details surrounding the cause of injury wasn't made available.

The city said all roads have been cleared of debris following many reports of flash flooding and downed trees. The traffic light at the intersection of McFarland Boulevard and Interstate 20/59 was damaged by the storm and remains under repair. Until is working again, a police officer will be on site directing traffic.

Officials will resume their storm damage assessment during the day Tuesday while monitoring for any further severe weather threats. Another update is expected to be released following an internal briefing, which has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Mayor Walter Maddox will meet the media at City Hall beginning at 10:30 a.m.
