BESSEMER, Ala. -- A homicide investigation is underway in Bessemer after an early-morning bar shooting left one man dead, Lt. Darron Hunter said.

According to Hunter, officers responded to report of a person shot shortly after 2 a.m. at Danny's Back Street Lounge in the 800 block of 14th Avenue North. Upon arriving, they found a white male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to UAB West Hospital, where he later died.

An initial investigation revealed that the alleged gunman and victim were at the bar for a "period of time" and later were involved in a verbal altercation, which is believed to have been the motive behind the fatal shooting. The suspect, who was described by police as a white male, was taken into custody at the scene. No charges have been filed at this time.

The names of the victim and suspect haven't been released.

Hunter said witnesses are being interviewed and an investigation remains ongoing.
