MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A member of the Alabama House of Representatives was arrested Thursday on felony perjury charges, acting Attorney General W. Van Davis said.

According to Davis, who was appointed by Attorney General Luther Strange to handle the ongoing public corruption investigation in the state, Rep. Barry Moore of the 91st District is charged with two counts of first-degree perjury and two counts of providing false statements to any matter under investigation by the attorney general. All four counts are Class C felonies.

Moore,
a 47-year-old from Enterprise who was elected to his position in 2010, surrendered to special agents at the Lee County Jail. According to jail records, his bonds totaled $11,000.

“It is a serious crime to provide false statements to a grand jury,” said Acting Attorney General Davis. “All citizens who testify before a grand jury must testify truthfully – even elected public officials. Any witness who makes a false statement in the matter under investigation by the Lee County Special Grand Jury will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of their political affiliation or position.”

If convicted, Moore faces a maximum penalty of one to 10 years imprisonment and fines of up to $15,000 for each count of providing false statements and perjury.

According to his Alabama House of Representatives profile online, Moore is a member of three committees, including the Commerce and Small Business Committee, which he serves as Vice-Chair.
