NWS Birmingham to replace tower by May 3

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service Birmingham office is offering weather-related alternatives after a recent transmitter outage.

The service's tower, which sits atop Red Mountain, failed over the weekend. NWS Meteorologist John De Block says the outage was due to old, worn-out equipment. He says it won't be fixed at least until May 3. He adds an expert from Atlanta will help with the tower replacement.

In the meantime, De Block suggests people tune into alternate neighboring towers.

"We like to encourage people to have a layered approach to receive weather notification. NOAA radio should be an important part of your program to receiving weather message, in addition, there are a lot of apps available and our broadcasters," De Block says.
