The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) announced Tuesday the winners of the 2014 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, and ABC 33/40 earned six awards in Region 9 of Large Market Television, including one for Overall Excellence.

The awards recognize the best electronic journalism produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world and are separated into 14 categories. Along with Overall Excellence, ABC 33/40 grabbed five other prestigious awards in the following categories:

Continuing Coverage (Marks Village Gas Explosion)
News Series (Life on Dynamite Hill)
Reporting:  Hard News (Child Porn Confession)
Writing (Former reporter/weekend anchor Bryant Somerville)

According to a release, RTDNA received more than 4,000 entries during the 2014 awards season, setting an all-time record. A total of 661 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards were given out to various news organizations nationwide.

"The Murrow Awards honor journalism at its finest," said Mike Cavender, Executive Director of RTDNA. "Local newsrooms serve their communities 365 days a year, and we're proud to recognize the great work they do."

In the large market television category, five stations led the way with six Murrows each this year:  KARE-TV in Minneapolis, WXIA-TV in Atlanta, WCVB-TV in Boston, WBMA-TV in Birmingham, Ala. and KING-TV in Seattle.

For each win in the individual categories, ABC 33/40 is automatically entered in the national Edward R. Murrow Awards competition.
