JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -

Jefferson County deputies were called to a mobile home in the 4600 block of Elfreth Johnson Road in northeast Jefferson County Tuesday afternoon.

They were called there to check on the welfare of two small children. The caller expressed concern there was drug activity at the mobile home and the caller was concerned about the 5 and 8 year old children who lived there. Deputies knocked on the mobile home door and a 29-year-old woman came to the door. At first, she told deputies she was there alone. When deputies heard noise coming from a travel trailer parked on the same lot, she told them her adult-stepson, 20-year-old Jeremiah Small, was inside the trailer. She knocked on the door and Small came out. Both granted permission for deputies to search the mobile home and the travel trailer. Once inside the travel trailer, deputies located an active meth lab. Deputies then called narcotics investigators. Drug paraphernalia was found inside the mobile home. Small was arrested and charged with unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance. He remains in the Jefferson County jail with bond set at $150,000.

The 5 and 8  year olds were located and they were unharmed. DHR was called to the scene to help. A safety plan was enacted and the children were removed from the home for their safety and placed with relatives. Investigators say chemical endangerment of a child charges are being pursued against the 29-year-old woman who is the mother of the children.
