A former Elmore County coroner has been sentenced to jail and probation on charges of theft and ethics violations.
State Attorney General Luther Strange said Timothy Ellison was sentenced to four years on ethics violations, four years on theft charges and one year on a second theft charge.
Ellison was convicted of overcharging the county, the state and several municipalities for transporting dead bodies. Authorities have said director of the Hillside Mortuary in Wetumpka, Yancey Joe Mitchell III, was Ellison's co-conspirator and has been sentenced to a year of probation.
Ellison's sentence was suspended, and he's been ordered to serve 9 months in jail followed by two years of supervised release. Ellison was previously ordered to pay nearly $8,000 in restitution.
