BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Flood warnings continue across the southern two-thirds of Alabama after rains dumped more than 6 inches of rain.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for rivers in west Alabama and near Montgomery as the rain drains southward toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Many streams and rivers aren't supposed to crest until late Tuesday, although major problems aren't expected since rural areas are most at risk.

The deluge left a mess in metro Birmingham, where residential flooding forced many people from their homes.

The weather service says heavily populated Shelby County received more than 5 inches of rain, and flood-prone Bessemer received more than 6 inches west of Birmingham.

Rainfall totals exceeding 3 inches were common, but the forecast shows most areas should dry out this week.
