The goal at Girls Inc in Central Alabama is simple. They want to inspire these young ladies to go on to bigger and better things, hoping to equip them with everything they need to succeed in life.
"The mission is to inspire the girls to be young, smart and bold, and what we mean by that is to empower them, give them the tools to take care of themselves, so that they are strong in entering the world and making great choices and building confidence and all for those things she needs to be successful," says President and CEO Monique Gardner-Witherspoon.
There are so many programs that go on here year round, but to keep these programs going, it takes money. That's why each year the organization hosts the Cajun Cook-Off. This is the organization's biggest fundraiser.
"We have 16 teams, they come out, they cook.. They decorate their tents, a lot of fun, a lot of competition. We have judges who come out and judge the food."
This year is the Fourth Annual Cajun Cook Off. It's set for this Saturday, April 12th at Linn Park. The purchase of a ticket allows you to taste test all your Cajun favorites, and your vote helps determine the winner of The People's Choice Award.
"Last year we yielded about 750 community members. They come out, taste good food. It's just a wonderful community event, great support for it, and we are looking for to increasing numbers and just great fun."
It's a great way for you to help continue the mission of the organization- one young girl at a time.
"We provide an opportunity for the girls to be themselves in a gender specific environment- no boys.. And it really provides optimal opportunity to program effectively with our girls."
