Flash flood emergency issued for Shelby, Jefferson counties after numerous reports of water rescues

HOMEWOOD, Ala. -- A Flash flood emergency has been issued for Jefferson, Shelby and northern Bibb counties until 7:30 a.m., the National Weather Service in Birmingham announced early Monday morning.

Local emergency management agencies have reported significant flooding and numerous high water rescues at various areas of all three counties and the rescue operations remain ongoing. One of the hardest hit areas is a portion of south Homewood near Lakeshore Drive and Interstate 65, where rescue crews are paddling around in boats at Lakeshore Garden Apartments trying to get residents to safety. Cars and SUVs in the parking lot are almost completely submerged in water.

According to meteorologist Brian Peters, approximately 15 people had been rescued as of 5:30 a.m.
