BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tom Watson, a PGA Tour legend and the captain of the 2014 Ryder Cup Team, has agreed to play in the 2014 Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek, tournament organizers announced Friday.

Watson, 64, committed to playing in the major championship on Thursday, joining the talented field with other tour stars like Fred Couples, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Bernard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Nick Price and Curtis Strange.

Watson won the Champions Tour major championship in 2003 with a birdie putt on the final hole of the then-named Jeld-Wen Tradition in Oregon. Since joining the senior tour in 1999, he has recorded 14 tournament victories and six major title wins. His last appearance at Shoal Creek was in 2011.

"Watson is a legend of the game of golf, and we are excited to have him back at Shoal Creek this year for the Regions Tradition," said tournament director Liz Leckemby. "This year's field is really shaping up to be our best and most competitive field ever.  It will be fun for the fans to have so many champions and legends in one place for this major championship at Shoal Creek."

During his 27-year career on the PGA Tour, Watson won 39 events, putting him at 11th all-time in career wins. He also won eight major championships including five U.S. Open titles, the last two coming back-to-back in 1982 and 1983.

Watson is currently No. 131 on the PGA Tour's list of career money leaders with total earnings of $11,015,790.

The Regions Tradition will be held May 14-18 and is the first of five major championship events on the Champions Tour. The winner will take home a staggering $2.2 million.
