The Open Door Experience to History Museum project in Bessemer will open October 30, coming 47 years to the day after Civil Rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his brother A.D. King, Ralph Abernathy and Wyatt T. Walker were arrested and jailed in 1967.

ABC 33/40 first reported that the non-profit organization Open Door Experience to History Foundation  Organizers was spearheading the project with the intent to open the exhibit in January, but more time was needed and the opening was delayed to this Fall.

"This project has been very involved, and the foundation has taken care to get the details right," Jefferson County Commissioner Sandra Little Brown said in a news release. "Being able to add to the fabric of history in this way is something that can't be rushed, and it is something being taken seriously. We owe it to the citizens of Bessemer and cities across the country to build an amazing tribute to Civil Rights."
