BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --A Lee County man who robbed four Birmingham-area banks and a bank in Cullman over a span of 12 days in 2013 was sentenced to over eight years in prison Thursday, US Attorney Joyce White Vance announced.

Jimmy Dawson Cunningham Jr., 39, was sentenced by a federal judge to 100 months in prison for his bank robbery spree, which began Jan. 3 when he robbed the National Bank of Commerce on Shades Creek Parkway. Less than two weeks and four bank robberies later, Cunningham was arrested and charged in all five incidents.

Other banks robbed included two in Mountain Brook -- PNC Bank on Euclid Avenue and Regions on Culver Road -- as well as the First Community Bank in Cullman and Union State Bank in Pelham. Authorities recovered the cash stolen from First Community Bank, putting his total amount of money stolen at $14,780, which the judge ordered him to repay in the form of restitution.
