HUEYTOWN, Ala. (AP) - Jefferson County sheriff's officials say a convicted sex offender who was caught umpiring a girls' softball league is free on $30,000 bond.

Sheriff's spokesman Randy Christian said Tuesday that Hueytown police told them 36-year-old Fred Allen Thomas III was umpiring the children's games. Sgt. Jack Self says Thomas surrendered to authorities on March 21 and was charged with failure to register employment within the prescribed time and loitering in specific areas.

Sheriff's officials say the softball association Thomas was working for was responsible for screening employees. Authorities say Thomas worked three games before a parent reported him to police.

Self says Thomas had previously been convicted of sexually abusing a 6-year-old girl.

It's unclear if Thomas has an attorney, and a number listed for him has been disconnected.
