ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. -- Firefighters made a grim discovery while working to extinguish a woods fire in Altoona early Thursday morning, ABC 33/40 reporter Robert Richardson has learned.

Crews with the Egypt Volunteer Fire Department were called to a fire in a wooded-area on Pine Hill Trail, which is a road used for logging, shortly after 1 a.m. and later found a body inside a burned SUV amidst the blaze. The victim and vehicle were burned beyond recognition.

Investigators with the Etowah County Sheriff's Office have since sent the human remains to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville, where an autopsy will be performed in an attempt to identify the victim and determine an official cause of death.

It is unknown at this time if foul play was involved.
