Barons hold National Anthem auditions for season

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Francis Scott Key penned "The Star Spangled Banner" 200 years ago. The poem was put to music, and became our National Anthem. Monday, dozens of people had a chance to audition, to sing the famous words during the Barons up-coming season.

"What we're trying to do is give fans the chance to really be involved in our operations," Nick Dobreff, Birmingham Barons said. "One of the ways we do that is to have them come out and try out for the national anthem auditions."

"I thought it was fine and relaxed until I got up there with a microphone," Stephen Kent, who auditioned said.

"I don't know what could bring me more joy than what today did," Kristen Viikinsalo, whose daughter auditioned said.

'The way I look at it, the Star Spangled Banner and baseball are as American as apple pie!" Louisa Reyes, who auditioned said.

"You hope that everyone does a good job, but you get some that are of higher talent and some of lower talents," Dobreff said.

Around 150 people are auditioning for the chance to sing at the stadium. Only 69 will be chosen.

"When you have those nerves going, I've seen people repeat a verse or skip a verse or go up and octave or down an octave. You see just about anything happen," Dobreff said.

The Barons play their first game this Friday. An exhibition against the White Sox. Their first regular season game is set for April ninth. Decisions on the 69 chosen will be made in the next couple weeks.
