Greg McElroy is ready to get back into the business of college football.

The former Alabama quarterback, who retired from the NFL last week, will be an analyst for the SEC Network.

"You grow up wanting to play in the NFL and loving playing the game," McElroy told AL.com. "I started playing this game when I was 8, and for the first time in 17 years, I won't be putting on shoulder pads and a helmet every day in the fall. It will be difficult, but I know that with the opportunity to work for ESPN and cover a conference I'm so passionate for, there were just too many positives to overlook."

McElroy was Alabama's starting quarterback in 2009 and 2010 and helped the Tide to the BCS Title Game win over Texas in the Rose Bowl.

The New York Jets drafted McElroy in the seventh round of the 2011 draft. He started one game in two seasons with the Jets and spent last season on the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad.

The SEC Network is scheduled to hit the airwaves on Aug. 14, 2014.
