Colorado plane crash: Friends, teachers share memories of young victims

Posted: Updated:

Colorado rescuers have not yet located the five passengers on board a Gadsden plane that crashed in a reservoir near Montrose.

It is believed the people on the plane were the owner, Jimmy Hill, Katrina Barksdale, her children, Kobe and Xander and her nephew, Seth McDuffie all of Gadsden.

The search started for the single engine plane Saturday around two in the afternoon. The plane was flying from Oklahoma to Montrose, which is Southwest of Denver, when it went down.

While rescuers haven't found the family, no one is believed to have survived the crash. The Gadsden community came together to offer support and prayers.

Two brothers who loved sports and life.. touched many hearts at Mitchell Elementary School.

Principal Roger Wilkinson says, "Anytime you lose a member of the family, it's tough to get over. It's something you're never going to get over."

Friends, teachers and administrators honored Kobe and Xander Barksdale with a prayer service.

Sonya Shelton says, "Teachers and students just have a special bond. It's the same as losing a family member."

Kobe a Fourth grader and Xander a Second grader are believed to have been on board a small plane with their mother, Katrina, that crashed Saturday in Colorado.

It's also believed their cousin, Seth McDuffie, a student at Westbrook Christian School, went with them.

Candles, stuffed animals and sports gear were left at Mitchell Elementary. Sonya Shelton taught Xander second grade. "He was full of life all the time. He was the class clown, he was very competitive, loved sports."

For Spring break, the group was going on a ski trip. The plane belongs to Jimmy Hill, who reportedly flew out with them around 8-30 Saturday morning. An airport employee considered hill to be an experienced pilot. He is the owner of Gadsden Tool.

Heavy hearts and shock felt by many who await more details as to what happened.

Wilkinson says, "Just the kind of kids you love to have a school full of them, full of life, energy. good kids, great family."

With school out this week for Spring break, Principal Wilkinson told me staff members will be talking to children about what happened when they return. We'll update you on this story as we learn more.
