Tilda Mims remember when the defunct McFarland Mall was built. "This was done when I was a in junior high school," she said.
Backhoes started tearing down the Mall Wednesday, to make room for 'Encore' which will be the mall's new name. "This has been abandoned so long, I'm glad to see something beautiful come here," added Mims.
Owner Stan Pate is investing $75 million dollars to build an open-air , family geared mall to replace McFarland Mall.
It could once again make the corner of Skyland and McFarland Boulevard a main shopping area in Tuscaloosa.
"Its unique in that it has that interstate access. He'll be able to get some businesses that really desire that interstate attraction," said Brendan Moore, Director of Economic Development for the City of Tuscaloosa.
Pate hopes to complete demolition of the old Mall by July. Encore is expected to open in late 2015 or early 2016.
