OXFORD, Ala. -

Calhoun County prosecutors filed capital murder charges against a suspect in a 1997 cold case.

Oxford police arrested Jack David Stovall, II, for killing Floyd Roger Hurst.  Hurst went missing from his Oxford home January 26, 1997.

"We have investigators in several different counties and communities, as we speak, interviewing individuals," Oxford police chief Bill Partridge said Friday afternoon.

"The family has been notified and they are aware of the situation."

Partridge said there was a recent break in the case, but declined to release specifics.  He said investigators from the Oxford Police Department, Alabama Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cleburne County Sheriff's Office, and the Calhoun-Cleburne District Attorney's Office worked together on this 17-year-old case.

"A cold case is difficult to work, but if you have agencies that are willing to work together with each other, and being able to compile the information, interview the people that need to be interviewed across borders, we can get a break in the case and further along the investigation, and hopefully come to a prosecution in the matter," Chief Partridge said.

Investigators said Hurst and Stovall had a working relationship, and that Stovall was a person-of-interest in Hurst's disappearance since the day he went missing.

Stovall pleaded guilty later in 1997 in a federal murder for hire case.  He is currently being held in the Cleburne County Jail with no bail.

Investigators ask anyone with any information involving the Floyd Hurst cold case to contact the Oxford Police Department's tip line at 256.835.6122.
