Day after losing his job, man commits suicide atop downtown Birmingham parking deck

Update 10:15 a.m.

The incident in downtown Birmingham has concluded after police discovered a man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Lt. Sean Edwards told ABC 33/40.

"At this time the issue has been resolved," Edwards said. "Our tactical unit approach the vehicle breached the door and found the individual deceased inside the car."

The victim, who reportedly lost his job with a local engineering firm Tuesday, is believed to be in his late 30s.

An investigation remains ongoing.

Update:

The coroner has been called to the scene of a standoff with police in a downtown Birmingham parking deck, which is near 4th Avenue North and 19th Street N.

Details are limited at this time but streets remain closed between 3rd Avenue N. through 5th Avenue N.

ABC 33/40 will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information is made available.

Several streets are closed in downtown Birmingham due to police activity this morning.

3rd through 5th Avenue North are blocked off by the Birmingham Police Department due to a man with a gun locking himself in a pickup truck.
