National Park Service Director visits Birmingham

Posted: Updated:

The National Park Service Director paid a visit to the Magic City Sunday.

Jon Jarvis toured the Civil Rights District with Mayor William Bell. He's helping look for additional ways to tell Birmingham's story to the world. The city hopes to capitalize on cultural tourism dollars to position the city as the human rights destination in the U.S.

Monday, Jarvis will be in Selma dedicating Edmund Pettus Bridge as a National Historic Landmark.

Jarvis says, "What happened in Birmingham and what happened Bloody Sunday in Selma are all key components we need to get all Americans to understand what happened here and how it is relevant to their lives today."

National parks in Alabama supported more than 300 jobs in 2012 and visitors spent around 26 million dollars.
