Former Alabama Senator seeks Attorney General as trial witness

Posted: Updated:

Former Alabama Senator Lowell Barron is calling on Attorney General Luther Strange to testify in his campaign finance trial.  However, the attorney general is trying to avoid taking the stand.
Court documents show Strange argues he shouldn't be called to testify because his office handled the investigation that led to a grand jury indictment of Barron and his campaign assistant.  Strange also says he has no direct knowledge of information related to the criminal case.
Barron's lawyer obtained a subpoena to call Attorney General Strange as a defense witness. Strange is asking a judge to block that subpoena..
DeKalb County Circuit Judge Randall Cole has scheduled a hearing Friday in preparation for the trial expected to start on April 14 in Fort Payne.
