Alabama Senators have approved a bill to toughen welfare regulations 24-4.

The bill would require drug testing on welfare applicants who have had a drug conviction within the past five years. It would also cut benefits to those getting benefits after three failed drug tests.

The bill is sponsored by Republican Senator Trip Pittman of Daphne. He says the legislation would inspire more people to stop taking drugs. The bill is set to expire in 2017.

It will now be sent to the House.
