Doug Goodwin is no longer the football coach of the Homewood Patriots.

Homewood City Schools released a statement on Wednesday stating that it was relieving Goodwin of his coaching duties.

Patriots assistant Ben Berguson will serve as the interim head coach.

"Our players respect Coach Berguson and he knows our program inside and out," according to the statement released through Homewood City School. "We believe this decision was appropriate and we expect a smooth transition."

AL.com reported on Tuesday that Goodwin had been asked to resign as head coach of the Patriots because he is not a good fit at the school.

Goodwin told AL.com that he has no plans to resign.

Goodwin is 23-10 in three seasons at Homewood. The Patriots won a region title each of the last two years in Class 5A.

Homewood beat Russell County in the first round of the playoffs last year before losing to Saraland.

Berguson has served as Goodwin's offensive line coach each season at Homewood.

"I am honored to be named the interim head coach during this period of transition," Berguson said in a statement. "Homewood City Schools has a rich tradition of success both on and off the field, and I am excited about working with these fine young men. The team will continue to work hard preparing for the upcoming football season."

Homewood City Schools says it's search for a permanent head football coach will begin immediately.
