Money, renovations coming to Birmingham parks

The first phase of more landscaping, lighting and security begins for some Birmingham city parks.

City councilors approved about $354,000 Tuesday for renovations at 14 parks, according to Mayor William Bell's chief of staff Chuck Faush.

The areas  include Ensley, Hawkins and Hooper City parks. The upgrades are part of the city's $150 million dollar bond referendum passed in 2012.

Faush told ABC 33/40 Mayor William Bell hopes to create more growth in neighborhoods.

"He used Railroad (Park) as a prime example of creating a public space where development will occur around it and that's what he is pushing us to do in every neighborhood," Faush says.

A total of $20 million of the bond referendum will go toward city parks and recreational facilities.
