Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office looking for 'Posse' members

It may sound a bit rhetorical or like something you hear on TV, but the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office is trying to build its "Posse."

Applications are being accepted right now.

Basically, you'll be trained to assist deputies in the event of a disaster and may be called upon to help search for victims or perhaps a lost child, etc.

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to attend the Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) training at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Firefighters building on University Boulevard, which is near the Bruno's grocery store.

C.E.R.T. volunteers are trained to help deputies in rescue situations.

Neither of the groups will be asked to train in tactical situations nor will they be certified to do so.

Requirements and duties as listed on the sheriff's office website:

Requirements:

Must be 19 years of age or older
Must live in Tuscaloosa County
Must not have been convicted of a felony crime
Must have a valid Alabama Driver's license
Must not be addicted to alcohol/drugs
Must pass a background / criminal history check
Must attend a scheduled annual meeting to train on agency function
Have finger/palm printing
Attend one orientation offered monthly at TCSO facility

Duties (Non-tactical):

Search for missing people (Use of 4 wheeler; on foot)
Conduct residential checks / neighborhood watch
Assist disabled persons
Assist traffic/ parking
Assist Mounted Unit
Assist during disaster situations
Iron Horse Posse
Assist with Clerical Help
